"C" Is For Carrot, And That's OK With Me (In This One Case)

Hi, I'm here today to talk to you about carrots. Now, I know that this may seem strange after my recent post about the [still can't discuss it] soup, but it's OK. This time the veggies are in shampoo (and safe from eating).

Pamper your hair, it does. This is a completely perfect shampoo and highly recommended by me. I l.o.v.e. it.

In spite of its artificial Tang-like color, it is surprisingly healthy-feeling. And, not only does it have carrots in it, but also sweet potato and pumpkin. (Perfect for this time of year!)

Also, if you're like me and struggle to eat your veggies, I figure that you're bound to pick up a vitamin or two if your shampoo is made from carrots. So give it a try!

Shampoo Review: Aura Pure

Aveda products are my all time favorite beauty products. If I purchased all of the Aveda products that I want to, the total cost would be equal to the gross domestic product of a South American nation. So until I win the lottery or Aveda starts to just give me their products, I need to improvise where I can. For example, at my shampoo playground (Sally Beauty Supply) a "generic" version of Aveda exists at a drastically lower price than the real thing. It's called Aura. Aveda products are all natural, and Aura products seem to have a lot of chemicals in them that mimic the natural-ness of Aveda products, because the scent is pretty darn close.

So here is my review of Aura's Pure shampoo, which is the doppelgänger for Aveda's Shampure.

Aveda Shampure = $19.00, Aura Pure = $5.00

Reigning Frog's Verdict: You get what you pay for.

Would it surprise anyone if I said I wanted this honey shampoo? I do-- badly. It would match my runny honey bodywash so perfectly! And combined with my chocolate shampoo...oh my God!

Summer Beauty Staples

June 1st is the first day of summer in my book, which is a mixed blessing to me. I enjoy many many things about this fine season, but--truth be told--I hate heat. In fact, it makes me rather miserable. The only thing, besides A/C, that helps me cope is beauty products. Here are some I can't live without until September.

V05 Moisture Milks Blueberries & Cream shampoo. Nothing says summer like blueberries & cream! Wash your hair with this before heading out into the sun and your hair will smell pleasantly fruity all day. (Sorry men, like Pantene, creamy fruit shampoos are only for women.)

Purpose Gentle Cleansing Bar. A must have for facial cleansing in humid weather! I use it morning, afternoon, and night. It's much better than Neutrogena's facial cleansing bar.

Plain old Noxema. Forget saving it for sunburns. Use it anytime, anywhere on your body to cool off.

If all else fails in a need to beat the heat, sit inside an air conditioned room and watch General Hospital. It works, I swear!

My next conquest

I must have this as my next new shampoo... L'Oreal VIVE Pro Nutri Gloss. What's not to love? Pink bottle, infused with pearl proteins, makes hair as soft as cashmere.

Oh, yes, I will have this. It is my destiny.

I have long feared that men would not heed my warnings that certain shampoos are just not intended for use by males, and now look what's happening...little boys using the wrong shampoos are developing boobs. I knew this day would come, and now it's here. I'll do what I can to help, but you should have listened sooner. My next post will list male-safe shampoos, but I may not be able to get to it until this weekend. In the meantime, guys, you may need to do some bra shopping.

Thairapy

Today I finished a HUGE project at work that I've been working on all month--the 2006 Annual Report for my place of employment. I feel like I just gave birth to a strapping 71-page baby boy. He's 8 1/2 by 11 inches and weighs, probably, 6 oz.

When I finally got the damn thing to the printer, I ran to the closest CVS/Rite Aid/Walgreens to reward myself with a new shampoo. I call it "Thairapy."

What a wonderful day to buy a new shampoo! Right there on the shelves at CVS, as if waiting for me, was a BRAND NEW scent of VO5 shampoo and conditioner--Vanilla Mint Tea Therapy! It's so new it's in their newly-shaped bottle, and I can't even find it on their website yet.

I bet it's a test product, and Alberto VO5 himself heard about my shampoo obsession, so he put the market samples of vanilla mint here in Buffalo. Well, Mr. VO5, I'll be happy to test your product tonight and tell you what I think.

Shampoo Review: DeGunk-ilicious

Who doesn't want to try a shampoo that promises to tingle?

I know I was smitten at first glance by Herbal Essences degunkifying shampoo once I saw the word "tingling." Then I read further and fell even more in love. The ingredients are...get this...icy pineapple and cotton leaf! I have no idea if icy pineapple and cotton leaf 1. exist 2. are good for hair or 3. are actually in the shampoo, but doesn't it sound cool?!

I have tested this product, and it does tingle. Not in a medicated dandruff shampoo way, but in a fun "I'm pampering myself with this awesome shampoo" way.

Here's a scenario where this product is just what you need... You have a hot date on Saturday night and want to look your best, so you pull out all the stops and use Paves Professional styling products to create a Good Hair Evening. The next day is Sunday. You had so much fun on your date you decide you deserve to stay in all day relaxing and having a movie fest--you never even get out of your pajamas. Monday morning, back to the grindstone. But you haven't washed your hair since Saturday night and it's now literally gunky, plus...you need a little pick-me-up because it's Monday Morning. You need to degunkify.

So I highly recommend this product. The only con is that there's no matching conditioner. Maybe Herbal Essences thinks that conditioner would re-gunkify your hair, but it's one of very few shampoos with no matching conditioner. One thing to look out for-- it tends to be on the shelves next to Herbal Essences "Drama Clean", which is also in a green bottle, so don't get confused. You want to tingle.

Men, since this product is not made by Pantene, it's OK for you to try too.

¿Qué es eso?

OK, this is bad even for me. I bought this shampoo today at CVS. It was on clearance for $1.00. It's made by Sunsilk, which is a brand I trust, so I just bought it for the joy of buying cheap shampoo. But when I looked a little closer at the bottle I realized that the entire packaging (except the word "Sunsilk") is written in Spanish. I have no idea what it says. For all I know, this shampoo could make your hair fall out! From the picture on the bottle it seems to have cactus juice in it or something. I'm going to have to do some research on this and get back to you. Anyone know Spanish?

Shampoo Review: Good-Hair-Days are Sweet as Honey

I had a Good-Hair-Day last night and I owe it all to stylist to the stars Ken Paves. Ken has this awesome line of 8 "FLAW-less" haircare products that are available exclusively at Walgreens. Each product is only $5.99, which is fantastic considering that they are truly professional salon quality. Of the 8 products, I used the 4 pictured here last night (but of course I do own the other 4 and recommend them all).

Typically I like to use a different shampoo each time I wash my hair, but if I was stuck on a deserted island and could only have one hair product I would choose Ken's hands down. The ingredients are unbelievable. The shampoo has numerous essential oil extracts, the conditioner has milk and shea butter, the mousse has honey, and the hairspray has Burdock Root, which theoretically stimulates hair growth.

The only thing I'm not sure of is if these products work well for all hair types. I have long, fine hair of medium thickness. I have to condition a lot to keep the ends from drying, yet my roots are oily. When I style my hair I need products that add volume. Ken's products are perfect for my specific hair criteria, and perhaps they work for others too, I just don't know. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this line of haircare products.

Shampoo Strike

As a self-proclaimed shampoo connoisseur (why can't I ever spell that word properly? Must be French. Of course it is will all those unnecessary letters...) Anyway, as a shampoo CONNOISSEUR I make my daily selection based upon the immediate needs of my hair. For example, today I wanted more volume so I selected Infusium 23 which professes to do just that. Well, it sucked. Strike 1 Infusium! I've used it successfully before, so I'm thinking it must be an inconsistent product. So I wanted to share my experience with you in case you are relying on Infusium for an important occassion. It's not to be trusted!

A dream come true, Chocolate Shampoo!

I found a miracle yesterday! A true masterpiece of human ingenuity. I couldn't believe my eyes. Could it be? Could such a perfect product be real? But it is real, and it's wonderful! The best thing about it is that it's a 3-in-1 product; shampoo, shower gel AND bubble bath. I was skeptical that such a product would properly cleanse, condition and prepare my hair for styling, but it was as good as, if not better than, my recommended Herbal Essences line. This is a limited edition product made by Philosophy available in Sephora stores and at Sephora.com, and I give it two combs up and a Godiva truffle (that's the equivalent of like 7 stars!).

A handy use for shampoo (other than for washing your hair)

I tested a little trick today that I read about in a magazine recently. I handwashed my pantyhose in the sink with shampoo. Strange? Yes. But it worked well, so I’m going to give it my shampoo seal of approval. I personally used Flex balsam & protein because of it's fresh, clean scent. But I imagine you could use any shampoo.

Men, you could even do this with your dress socks if you're in a bind. (Just don't use Pantene.)

Shampoo Review: Pantene Ice! Nice!

Pantene Ice is a fine product that does what is says. From Pantene.com:

Shampoo:
Transform dull, lifeless hair into gorgeous hair. The clear formulation of NEW Ice Shine Shampoo gently cleans to remove dirt, oil, sebum (not sure what that is, but I guess I don't want it in my hair) and styling products, increasing the purity of the hair's surface, to better allow light to penetrate the clear cuticle to the inner cortex of each strand. (Cortex, that's a very serious word).

Conditioner:
NEW Ice Shine Conditioner contains high levels of silicones to smooth the hair’s surface—almost polishing it. (This has been my experience. It's like polishing silver-- well, except, my hair's not silver, it's brown-- but you get the idea.) Helps create the appearance of uniform strands, so hair fibers more effectively lie next to each other and create a smooth, glossy surface.

I give this product two combs up, and a scrunchie! (But remember, men, Pantene Ice may be shiny enough for a man, but it's made for women. Sorry.)

Pantene Pro-V shampoo is NOT for men!

As a shampoo connaisseur I have a statement to make. Pantene hair products are not intended to be used by men. I'm sorry, guys, they're just not. It would be like buying your underwear at Victoria's Secret. Now, I understand the temptation to use it with all those pro-vitamins and stuff. But no.

I think the best solution is for Pantene to come out with a men's line. Then all would be right with the world.

Shampoo Review: My Pearls of Wisdom

I am a shampoo connoisseur. Expensive or economical, professional or “over the counter”— I don’t care. I have long hair and I love to care for it with multiple shampoos. Today I used Herbal Essences "Break's Over” shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in cream. Fun stuff.

It’s an attractive product with its complementing contoured bottles of a smokey blue hue. Complete with “anti-breakage potion,” this product claims to have a fusion of coco mango and pearls. Pearls? The ingredients do list “pearl powder,” and that’s really cool; I’m just not sure what pearls can do for hair. Somehow jewelry and shampoo seem as likely to pair as apples and tires.

Anyway… This product is included in my regular mix of shampoos and I have no split ends, so it could be working. I give it two combs up.
